Food close-up in Kikunoya

We had a twin room with no view, the room was spacious and nicely decorated. They provided free pickup and drop off at the ferry, when you get to the island ask the information desk personnel to call the hotel for you, have the phone number ready. We had the dinner at the hotel, they asked in advance of any allergies or preferences. We do not eat raw fish and they provided substitutes for us. There is an onsen but we didn’t have time to use it as we went to see the Tori gate lit up at night instead. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

Our stay at this modern hotel on Miyajima Island was fantastic from start to finish. The room was spacious, spotless, and very comfortable — a perfect place to relax after a day of exploring. Although the hotel is about a kilometer from the ferry terminal, they offer a free and very convenient transfer service, which made everything super easy. The location is excellent, just a short walk to the famous Itsukushima Shrine, the iconic torii gate, and also close to the ropeway up Mount Misen. We chose a plan with dinner and breakfast included, and the dining experience was truly exceptional — dinner was a beautifully presented multi-course fine dining experience, and breakfast was a traditional Japanese-style meal that we really enjoyed. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and check-in, check-out, and arranging the transfer were all effortless. The small public bath was a great way to relax, especially the outdoor section, which was tastefully decorated with plants and felt amazing on a chilly night after a day of hiking. Highly recommended for a peaceful and luxurious stay on Miyajima!

Restaurant/places to eat in Kikunoya

Great Ryokan in great location. I don’t normally write reviews but one review I’d seen complaining about a lack of toast for breakfast is just so stupid, I feel compelled. This is a Japanese style inn in Japan offering an authentic experience. If you want a western style hotel and a western breakfast there are plenty of places that cater to that, but if you’ve elected to travel to Japan for a Japanese experience, this is a wonderful option. They will pick you up in a free shuttle at the ferry terminal. They had a foot onsen out front of the hotel which was fun to sit and try, and I was the only one in the traditional onsen, so I enjoyed my very private indoor and outdoor bath. Many restaurants shut early as they cater to the day trippers but the hotel recommended Mametanuki and it was open until 8 and was excellent. If you want dinner at the hotel it must be booked 3 days in advance, but breakfast can be booked at the time of check in. Also—don’t feed the deer. There are signs telling tourists they are wild and to not feed them, but I saw several tourists feeding them! I recommend getting up early and visit Itsukuji before breakfast. I was there when it opened, enjoyed it without tons of people there and luckily that coincided with high tide. Then went back to my hotel for breakfast, and then was ready to ride the repeat at 9 when it opened. Again there were no lines, but when I came down there was a massive line.

I arranged a special surprise with the hotel to propose to my girlfriend, initially disguised as a birthday gift with a room upgrade and room service dinner. This review is thus not representative for the room linked to this booking. However, I want to specifically praise the hotel staff, with a specific shout-out to Katagiri. They went above and beyond to make this an unforgettable experience and I cannot thank them enough! The view from the seaside rooms is amazing and the beds are very comfy, the traditional dinner is on point and the staff is just wonderful.

Amazing service in a structure that think about you from the first to the last minute, from the transportation from/to the ferry terminal to the onsen introduction (should be ok for tattooed people too). Our room with Torii view was stunning, in japanese traditional style but with all necessary technologies and big tv. The dinner (all oysters) was good quality, but don't worry if you don't like them, they re gonna contact you and ask if you want to change with another menu. Perfectly clean, the position is a bit "up" the village but 2 minutes from the area to be visited, and no problem for arrival and departure, as mentioned. For the onsen they give you lovely yukata and all other accessories. The price is correct for this service.

Restaurant/places to eat in Kikunoya

Everything. The hotel is on the hill and approx. 20 minutes by foot from the ferry but the property provides a shuttle. 7 minutes away from Itsukushima-jinja. If you want to explore the island more after the check-out you could store your luggage and take a shuttle later that day. Clean and neat. Welcoming staff, most of them have good English. Nice colourful yukatas to select from and a hanten. Tasty traditional breakfast with an instruction on how to eat it. Comfortable bed in a classic room.

The set breakfast was great, and Japanese style, slightly different each day. The restaurant kindly gave us a vegetarian version after the first day when we realised how much of the breakfast contained seafood of some kind, as one of us is vegetarian. We didnt get the dinner, but if it was anything like the breakfast it would be pretty good. We got given robes (yukatas) to wear which we used to go to and from the onsen. The onsen was small but nice (no cold pool though, only two hot), and really welcome after a day’s hike up and down Mt Misen. Really recommend going up to Mt Misen if you like spectacular panoramic views. You can take the ropeway if you dont like hiking. Would recommend walking up Otomo Course and down Momijidani so as to avoid the crowds, if you are a hiker. There are other hikes on the island but unfortunately we didnt have time. Room was a good size, and being able to open the windows a bonus. There were hooks to hang towels and robes, a tiny clothes airer, even two fold up chairs. We didnt discover the in-room safe until too late. We got given complementary japanese pastries or biscuits each day, and cold water in a covered jug. Towels were changed every day, but we didnt use the fresh ones as it seemed a waste to launder towels after just one day (we were there for 2 nights). Dont do what we did and walk from the ferry pier to the hotel, unless you dont mind the wheels of your suitcases almost rattleling off on the rough stones on the walkways and narrow roads, it would ok with backpacks. The hotel provides a shuttle service (you can ring them for a pickup) which we used on check out.

We decided to stay overnight in Miyajima and it was one of the best experiences we had in our trip. Staff is really kind and professional. We had a twin room with extra bed and it was big, clean and perfectly equipped. Nice touches like the complimentary momiji manju and the yukata you get to choose at check-in. Breakfast was good, but dinner was the best we had during our stay in Japan. We went for the kaiseki-style and we absolutely recommend it (superb sashimi and chestnut ice cream). Definitely try the outdoor section of the onsen, as well as relaxing on the outside food bath after a day walking through the island. This ryokan caters mainly to Japanese clients, so it feels less touristy and more like the real thing. It's not cheap, but nothing is in Miyajima, and in our opinion, it was worth every penny.

We thought this Ryokan was perfectly located in Miyajima- easy to walk from the ferry but yet a bit up the hill and removed from the crowds. The ryokan had a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Our room , due to what was available at time of booking, was not traditional Japanese but we found it quite comfortable and of good size. It had the option of turning on jazz background music which we liked! We really enjoyed our Ryokan meals in Japan and Kikunoya did not disappoint. We had wonderful meals with friendly service. Meals here seemed to perhaps give a bit of a nod to western tastes and coffee was available in the morning! They also had a nice onsen with outdoor area ( no view) which again is an important part of the overall experience. We recommend this hotel .

This was truly a 10/10 property. I had a pleasant memory of visiting the island 10 years ago and was looking forward to it this time as well. Kikunoya made it a memorable experience 1. Staff - the staff was extremely attentive. They had passion for their job and took a vested interest in making sure we had a pleasant day. The nice handwritten notes at dinner, explanation of the dishes, helping us understand how to eat the food or when it was ready to eat, refilling water, miso soup were great. It is clear to understand that the staff here have a great attitude. It was the best hotel experience that I have had anywhere in the world 2. The hotel is very close to Itsukushima Shrine, which was very nice. We were able to visit it before the first set of tourists arrived on the ferry 3. Great amenities- convenient shuttle service, great hot springs I would definitely visit again. Thanks again Kikunoya for making this a pleasant honeymoon!
